Overview of Renewable Energy Sector in Nepal
Nepal’s geographical position as a landlocked country, makes reliance on fossil fuels an unviable solution. Hence, Nepal’s energy sector is highly dependent on renewable sources in order to meet energy demands. It is a well-established fact that Nepal’s potential for hydro electricity generation stands at a whopping 42,000MW. However, till date only a fraction, 2% of its potential has been installed.
Solar energy systems have over the past few years started to gain popularity and is being seen as a great alternative to petrol or diesel generators. However, solar energy systems are not feasible for large scale industrial projects and have hence mainly been used by households and small scale cottage industries.
It is expected that over the next few years, Nepal’s current power deficit will be met by increased private sector investment.
